THE LANAI SAN MATEO, CA near me should never have closed!!! I have only been here in NO. Cal since 1998 so I MISSED THIS GREAT PLACE!! I grew up watching giant wooden tikis and totem poles being made by a business around the corner from me in Pensacola Beach, FL on Santa Rosa island. Our cinder block beach house was remodeled and renovated (a second story added) in the early 1950's by my great grandmother and had gold-flecked light sconces, real wood paneling up the stair case and the second living room upstairs had a rather large 2-3 person bar and a large open floor plan for dancing- I loved all of things that remained in that home from that time period for decades - the house was destroyed by the tiki storm god. Luckily, I have some things like ashtrays and swizzle sticks from it. You could say that my love for my family beach house, visiting family in Hawaii, and my friend, Angie H., inviting me to her recently purchased mid-century style/decorated Palm Springs home (and visiting 3 PS tiki bars) have re-inspired by love for tiki.
