Humuhumu’s description

The Tiki Cocktail Lounge, or Tiki Lounge (its actual name seems to be rather elusive) is situated essentially in the parking lot for the Tropics Motel
Tropics Motel
Modesto, CA
, the Modesto entry in the midcentury Kimes Tropics Motels chain. The Tiki has fared a bit better than the barely-operational motel--while it's more of a beer joint (despite its full bar), it has managed to retain much of its tiki charm. There are lovely black velvet paintings, bamboo and thatch hut booths, a sometimes-lit pit fireplace and a small outdoor patio with a smattering of tikis. A jukebox, video poker and a few beer advertisement posters mar the mood, while the sometimes sketchy clientele heighten the sense of adventure. The Tiki Lounge is just down the road from Minnie's Restaurant

I made the Great Modesto Tiki Trek today---2 hours up and 2 hours back. I stopped at Minnie's first, then came down to see the Tropics motel (now dubbed Tiki Lodge) and check out Tiki Cocktail Lounge. It no longer opens at 2 pm. Drat! I Googled it and discovered the place is now a tiki gay bar. I had noticed a rainbow flag made of bamboo that was strung together hanging over the back entrance, which apparently is the only way in now. I also found its Facebook page ( ) which shows it opens at 5pm. Hmm. I thought about staying until 5 to get a peek inside...but that would mean a two hour drive in the dark. Nah. Not worth it. I'll catch it another time, perhaps...

No, we went to Minnie's as well. Minnie's was great. I don't have them confused. The Tiki standing guard, i was referring to, is the one that is the one in picture #8 above. I'll be heading back through town next month and do plan on stopping by again. If only to see if I'd missed something my first time and take a few photos, not necessarily for a drink.

I think you have the Tiki and Minnie's confused , The Tiki has never had black velvet paintings Minnie's has some . The same artist has some paintings on wood at the the Tiki . I'm not sure what TIKI STANDING GUARD at the entrance your referring to .... The back door is now the entrance and has not changed in thirty years . The booths are gone , please come back and critiki it in a few weeks .
