Mar Vista Lanes was built in 1961, and was designed by famed Googie-riffic architects Armet & Davis. It once housed a bar called the Makai Cocktail Lounge, which had a spare, modernistic take on tiki. The lanes are still open, but the only tiki to be had here today is one large tiki standing sentinel outside.
The Makai Room bar has not existed since the early 70's, when it was chopped in half to make space for a video arcade. It used to feature live jazz in the 60's. My friend, Curtis Tillman used to talk fondly of playing live jazz there.
According to Capt. R.H. Falernum on Tiki Central the tiki in the picture above has been stolen sometime around July 5, 2014. Bowlmor AMF, Inc announced in May 2014 that the Mar Vista Lanes would be undergoing massive renovations. Long time tenet Pepy's Galley Diner was forced to close on June 30, 2014.
