This classic Southern California tiki apartment building has an unusual amount of its Polynesian elements intact. The dramatic A-frame entryway shelters a collection of waterfalls and waterways, lined with nautical chain, and guarded by tiki rail posts. There is one very large old tiki still standing out front, and there are lush, tropical plantings and a cluster of tall palm trees.
Ridiculous! The neighborhood is fine, and the Islander itself is wonderful. I put it among the best tiki apartments I’ve seen so far, and I’ve seen quite a few now. I know it’s not as tiki as it once was, but there’s a lot left and it is well worth seeing. The entrance is an enormous A-frame. Underneath it is an intricate system of water features filling the air with soothing sound. A giant tiki stands guard amid a garden of flowers and tropical plants. To enter, the water must be crossed via a bridge guarded by more tikis. The pool area inside has a “Tiki Hut” recreation center.
