Ernest Beaumont-Gantt, who legally changed his name to "Donn Beach," opened this Waikiki version of his popular stateside restaurant chain after finishing his service in WWII. All other Don the Beachcomber locations were actually owned by his ex-wife and business partner Sunny Lund, but this location was owned by Beach until his death in 1987. Martin Denny got his start performing here. At the Sunday Luau, "Early reservations are required, and appropriate South Seas attire is mandatory," so says a souvenir fan from the restaurant.

When I lived in Hawaii, this was a regular stop for me.
You may or may not know this, but The Beachcomber was a driving force behind the International Marketplace in Waikiki, and this joint was the centerpiece for many years. Sadly, the IMP is now a thing of the past.
