Humuhumu’s description:
This non-traditional tiki bar in a tiny strip mall in Hollywood attracts a steady flow of hipsters. Appropriate to the name, the interior has lava-dark walls, with a smoke-heaving, water-dripping wall in the rear, and pin-point lights across the ceiling. The design is sleek, with a heavy use of bamboo and Oceanic Arts lighting. There are a few tikis near the front. Live music is often featured here, almost always of the non-tiki-friendly variety. Tropical drinks are served, but not in tiki mugs. Parking in the area is a challenge, to say the least.

In January of 2007 comes word that Lava Lounge's end is near... it will be closing at the end of February 2007, and will be remodeled into something else entirely.

I have a good memory of the Lava Lounge...

in 1999 I saw Shag playing guitar with the Tiki-Tones there, that was cool.

In its day, a surprisingly great tiki bar with a woefully underappreciated music scene and an awesome swingles atmosphere. Saw the Insect Surfers along with the Bomboras and many other local surf bands there during the 1990's. The horrible parking and immediate proximity to Mashti Malone's, a legendary Persian ice cream purveyor whose rosewater ice cream is the secret in more than a few tiki drinks, along with other dive bars in the same strip mall made the place incredibly vibrant without the clannish aversion to outsiders that some tiki bars revel in.
