The Tiki Cocktail Lounge, or Tiki Lounge (its actual name seems to be rather elusive) is situated essentially in the parking lot for the Tropics Motel, the Modesto entry in the midcentury Kimes Tropics Motels chain. The Tiki has fared a bit better than the barely-operational motel--while it's more of a beer joint (despite its full bar), it has managed to retain much of its tiki charm. There are lovely black velvet paintings, bamboo and thatch hut booths, a sometimes-lit pit fireplace and a small outdoor patio with a smattering of tikis. A jukebox, video poker and a few beer advertisement posters mar the mood, while the sometimes sketchy clientele heighten the sense of adventure. The Tiki Lounge is just down the road from Minnie's Restaurant (not walking distance, unfortunately).

I began visiting The Tiki (as we Modesto natives called it) in the mid 1990's before I turned 21. It was one of those rare bars that didn't ask, and we didn't tell. Many found memories of the establishment as well as many nights that I simply have no recolection of.
